Animal welfare

Aclima is known for making functional quality wool garments. To achieve this, it is important that the wool we use is also of good quality and that we focus on animal welfare.

Animal welfare is about how the animal is doing, and how it experiences and copes with the environment it lives in, both physically and mentally. For the animal to be well, there are some basic needs that must be met. The English Brambell Commission explored the concept of animal welfare and five freedoms in 1965 that are important for this.

Freedom from hunger and thirst

We ensure that all the animals that provide their wool to us have ample access to food and fresh water. All the sheep should have a diet that promotes good health and well-being.

Freedom from physical discomfort

Over the years, sheep have evolved in environments with extreme heat and cold, mainly adapting due to the wool on their bodies. To lend them a helping hand, our farmers go a step further to protect the sheep from distress by ensuring they have adequate shade and shelter available at all times.

Freedom from disease

To minimize stress and discomfort, farmers regularly monitor their flock to prevent disease, ensuring quick diagnosis and treatment if any of the animals become ill. Many of our breeders come from sheep farming families, where knowledge of sheep husbandry is developed and passed down through generations of breeding.

Freedom from anxiety and fear

Freedom to express normal behavior

Zentera Wool Company

All our merino wool comes from carefully selected farms in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Aclima primarily uses ZQ+ certified merino wool, a regenerative wool standard developed by Zentera Wool Company. ZQ+ builds on the high requirements of the ZQ standard and has an additional focus on regenerative agriculture, aiming to strengthen soil health, biodiversity and the natural environment where the wool is produced.

Zentera is a supplier of merino wool that sets high standards for both the farms they work with and the partners who buy their wool. With a strong focus on animal welfare, the environment, high quality, and a transparent value chain, Zentera is a leading player in responsible and regenerative wool production. All ZQ and ZQ+ certified wool has a unique code that makes it possible to trace the wool throughout the entire value chain.
